Ringlet (Aphantopus hyperantus)

The Ringlet (Aphantopus hyperantus) is a species of butterfly found in Europe and parts of Asia. It belongs to the family Nymphalidae. This butterfly is characterized by its dark brown wings, often with a velvety appearance, and the distinctive eye-like spots (or “ocelli”) on the undersides of its wings. These spots give it its name, as they resemble rings.

Key Features:

  • Wingspan: 40-52 mm
  • Color: Dark brown with lighter margins and rings or eye spots on the underside of the wings.
  • Flight period: June to August, depending on location.
  • Habitat: Prefers damp, grassy environments such as meadows, woodland clearings, hedgerows, and fields.
  • Caterpillar food plants: Various grasses, including cock’s-foot, meadow grass, and tufted hair-grass.

The Ringlet is known for its slow, fluttery flight and tendency to stay close to the ground. The species is relatively common and widespread in suitable habitats. The butterfly also has a particular liking for nectar from flowers like bramble and thistle.
